Southern Rocks have one hand firmly on the Logan Cup trophy after a dominant third day in their decisive clash against Eagles at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday, powered by superb centuries from openers Matthew Campbell and Innocent Kaia.

They closed the day on 471 for five in reply to Eagles’ declared first-innings total of 362 for eight.

In what is effectively a title decider between the first-class competition’s top two sides, Rocks entered the match with a seven-point advantage and are now firmly on course to claim the Logan Cup – even in the event of a draw.

Earlier, Craig Ervine struck his 23rd first-class century, drawing level with Hamilton Masakadza’s career tally, to anchor Eagles’ innings.

Resuming day three on 136 without loss, with Campbell on 71 and Kaia on 60, the Rocks openers extended their partnership to 196 before both fell in quick succession after reaching three figures.

Campbell made 106 off 149 balls, striking 13 fours, while Kaia compiled a composed 100 off 192 deliveries, including eight boundaries.

The momentum continued through Panashe Taruvinga and captain Roy Kaia, who added valuable contributions of 50 and 76 respectively.

By the time Roy Kaia became the fourth wicket to fall, Rocks had surged to 380, firmly in control of proceedings.

Johnathan Campbell ensured the innings retained its authority, becoming the fifth successive batter to pass fifty with a knock of 59.

Tafadzwa Tsiga remains unbeaten on 48 and will look to extend that sequence heading into the final day.

Rhinos – 243 and 168 all out in 40.3 overs (Ahsan Aqil Ali 52, Victor Chirwa 23, Brad Evans 20; Muhammad Sheraz 5/43, Prosper Mugeri 3/30, Vincent Masekesa 2/56)

Mountaineers – 127 and 78 all out in 40.3 overs (Prosper Mugeri 12, Spencer Magodo 12, Vincent Masekesa 11; Zaman Khwaja 4/5, Hendricks Macheke 3/25, Brad Evans 2/4)

Rhinos won by 206 runs

A sensational debut performance by pace bowler Zaman Khwaja headlined Rhinos’ emphatic 206-run victory over Mountaineers in their Logan Cup encounter at Takashinga Cricket Club on Wednesday, as the match was wrapped up inside three days.

Set a target of 285, Mountaineers’ second innings never recovered from a catastrophic start.

Brad Evans struck twice in the first four balls of the innings, removing both openers, Joylord Gumbie and Nick Welch, for ducks, with no score on the board.

Khwaja then tore through the middle order with a devastating spell of four wickets for just five runs in 5.3 overs, leaving Mountaineers in disarray.

Hendricks Macheke chipped in with three wickets to hasten the finish as Mountaineers were bundled out for 78 in 40.3 overs, with no batter managing more than 12.

Earlier, Khwaja had already made his mark with six for 45 in 13 overs as Mountaineers were dismissed for 127 in reply to Rhinos’ first-innings total of 243.

Rhinos managed 168 in their second innings, with Muhammad Sheraz claiming five for 43, setting up the decisive target of 285.

Khwaja ended the match as the standout performer, finishing with extraordinary figures of 10 wickets for 50 runs – six for 45 in the first innings and four for five in the second – in a memorable debut.

The result caps a disappointing campaign for Mountaineers, the 2024/25 champions, who finish second from bottom, while Rhinos conclude their season in third place.
