Centuries from Wessly Madhevere and Tadiwanashe Marumani highlighted a dominant second day for Eagles in their Logan Cup match against Tuskers at Takashinga Cricket Club on Wednesday.
After bowling Tuskers out for 166 on the opening day, Eagles closed day two on 512 for eight, holding a commanding lead of 346 runs.
They resumed on 152 for two, with Kudzai Maunze on 48 and night-watchman Alex Russell yet to score.
Maunze reached 55 before being dismissed, but his departure paved the way for a brilliant 243-run partnership for the fourth wicket between the two centurions.
Marumani was the more aggressive of the pair, scoring 124 off 186 balls, including four sixes and 11 fours.
His innings ended when Ali Hamid, given just a single over, trapped him lbw in a maiden over, with the score at 405 for four.
Madhevere then found useful support from Tony Munyonga (23) and Faraz Akram (24).
He reached 150 before falling to Tanatswa Bechani off the final ball of the day.
His innings, the highest of his career so far, came off 233 balls and included three sixes and 13 fours.
All of the bowlers endured a tough day in the field.
Mountaineers – 402-7 in 97.2 overs (Alistair Frost 209*, Mathew Welch 78, Wellington Masakadza 53; Brandon Mavuta 3/104, Brad Evans 1/58, Trevor Gwandu 1/65)
Rhinos –
Day 2 – Stumps
A superb double-century from Alistair Frost of Mountaineers dominated the play against Rhinos at Mutare Sports Club on Wednesday, as their Logan Cup match finally got underway after a washout on day one.
At the close of play, Mountaineers had reached a commendable score of 402 for seven wickets, with Frost still at the crease on 209.
Initially, Rhinos could feel pleased with their decision to put the home side in to bat, as they took their first two wickets for only 15 runs on the board – Mike Chinouya bowling Joylord Gumbie for one and Brad Evans trapping Nick Welch lbw for four.
However, Frost, who had opened the batting with Gumbie, was joined by Mathew Welch, and the pair took control of the game in a third-wicket partnership that eventually realised 143 runs.
Welch was then bowled by Brandon Mavuta for 78, scored off 104 balls with two sixes and seven fours.
The middle order did not contribute many runs, but Frost was in fine form, reaching his maiden first-class century, and he finally found another good partner in Wellington Masakadza.
They added 90 runs for the sixth wicket, of which Masakadza scored 53 off 86 balls.
When he left, Tashinga Musekiwa contributed a useful 26, while Frost completed his double-century just before the close.
He finished the day on 209 not out and has so far faced 283 balls, hitting a six and 28 fours.
Mavuta has so far taken three wickets, while Evans has been the most economical of the bowlers.
