Tuskers – 166 all out in 46.1 overs (Luke Jongwe 72, Ernest Masuku 19, Will Fraine 18; Alex Falao 5/40, Tapiwa Mufudza 1/4, Munashe Chipara 1/21)
Eagles – 152-2 in 26 overs (Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 51, Dion Myers 48, Kudzai Maunze 48*; Ernest Masuku 2/42)
Alex Falao’s sensational opening spell gave Eagles immediate dominance over Tuskers on the first day of their Logan Cup match at Takashinga Cricket Club on Tuesday.
Only Luke Jongwe’s fighting 72 prevented a total collapse as the Bulawayo-based team were bowled out for 166.
Eagles’ top order then consolidated their advantage, reaching 152 for two by the close of play.
After being sent in to bat, Tuskers endured a nightmare start against Falao’s fiery opening burst.
In his second over, he had Nkosana Mpofu caught for a duck before Faraz Akram removed Tanunurwa Makoni for two, leaving Tuskers reeling at two for two.
Tafara Mupariwa followed soon after, brilliantly caught in the slips by Wessly Madhevere for two off Falao, who then trapped Ali Hamid lbw without scoring.
At 16 for four, Tuskers were in deep trouble.
Will Fraine showed some resistance with 18, but the innings would have been a disaster if not for Jongwe’s defiant knock.
Jongwe counter-attacked with an aggressive 72 off 93 balls, striking nine boundaries.
He received brief support from Dalubuhle Mboyi (16), Ernest Masuku (19) and Tanatswa Bechani (12), but none could stay long enough to turn the tide.
Jongwe was the last man out, while Falao capped off his brilliant spell by dismissing Masuku to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in provincial cricket, for 40 runs.
Eagles' response was led by a blistering knock from Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, who smashed 51 off just 35 balls, featuring three sixes and seven fours.
His attacking innings set the tone as he and Kudzai Maunze put on 70 for the first wicket.
After Kamunhukamwe was bowled by Masuku, Myers carried on the momentum with a fluent 48 off 52 balls before also falling to the same bowler.
By stumps, Maunze remained unbeaten on 48, steering Eagles to a position of strength – just 14 runs behind with eight wickets in hand.
Meanwhile, no play was possible in the match between Mountaineers and Rhinos at Mutare Sports Club due to wet weather.
