Mountaineers – 203 all out in 51 overs (Nick Welch 73, Timycen Maruma 29, Brian Bennett 22; Alex Russell 5/84, Kundai Matigimu 4/20, Faraz Akram 1/29)
Eagles – 47-4 in 22 overs (Kudzai Maunze 21*, Tadiwanashe Marumani 9*, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 7; Tendai Chatara 3/20)
Alex Russell and Tendai Chatara starred with the ball on a challenging day for batters at Mutare Sports Club on Wednesday, as Mountaineers and Eagles locked horns in a Logan Cup encounter dominated by the bowlers.
Nick Welch was the standout performer with the bat, crafting a fine 74 for Mountaineers after they were put in to bat.
He faced 94 deliveries, striking five sixes and five fours in an attacking knock that provided much-needed resistance.
Brian Bennett supported him well with 22, helping Mountaineers reach 109 before the third wicket fell.
Timycen Maruma contributed a valuable 29, the second-highest score of the innings, before Russell ran through the middle and lower order.
Russell claimed five wickets for 84 runs in 15 eventful overs, while Kundai Matigimu provided a sharp contrast with his economical spell of four for 20 in the same number of overs.
Despite their efforts, Mountaineers managed to push their total just past 200, with Shingi Masakadza’s 17 proving crucial in getting them to 203 all out.
In response, Eagles found themselves in trouble against the experienced Chatara, who picked up three wickets to leave them reeling.
A run-out added to their woes as they stumbled to 47 for four by the close of play.
Kudzai Maunze, with 21, was the only Eagles batter to reach double figures as Mountaineers took firm control heading into day two.
Southern Rocks – 204 all out in 83.2 overs (Alvin Chiradza 67, Nigel Bonyongwe 43, Newman Nyamhuri 20; Nkosana Mpofu 3/12, Tanatswa Bechani 2/62, Brian Chari 1/4)
Tuskers – 21-1 in 6 overs (Mgcini Dube 10*, Nkosana Mpofu 6*; Roy Kaia 1/3)
Day 1 – Stumps: Tuskers trail by 183 runs
Alvin Chiradza played a crucial knock of 67 to steady Southern Rocks’ innings after a shaky start against Tuskers on the opening day of their Logan Cup match at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Wednesday.
Opting to bat first, Rocks found themselves in early trouble, losing their first four wickets for just 55 runs, with each dismissal credited to a different bowler.
Amid the top-order struggles, Nigel Bonyongwe provided resilience, battling his way to a patient 43 off 134 balls.
Chiradza then joined Bonyongwe at the crease, and together they rebuilt the innings with a crucial stand, pushing the total to 118 before Bonyongwe was run out.
Despite wickets falling at the other end, Chiradza held firm, striking 10 boundaries on his way to 67 before he became the seventh wicket to fall at 173.
His dismissal was part of a key spell from Nkosana Mpofu, who ripped through the middle order, taking three wickets for just 12 runs in five overs.
The Rocks tailenders managed to push the total past 200 before the innings closed at 204.
In response, Tuskers had an early setback, losing opener Tanunurwa Makoni for a duck in the second over, bowled by Roy Kaia.
At stumps, the hosts were 21 for one, trailing by 183 runs.
